Culture (from the Latin cultura stemming from colere, meaning "to cultivate") is a term that has different meanings. For example, in 1952, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of 164 definitions of "culture" in Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions. However, the word "culture" is most commonly used in three basic senses:

  • Excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture
  • An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning
  • The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group

When the concept first emerged in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, it connoted a process of cultivation or improvement, as in agriculture or horticulture. In the nineteenth century, it came to refer first to the betterment or refinement of the individual, especially through education, and then to the fulfillment of national aspirations or ideals. In the mid-nineteenth century, some scientists used the term "culture" to refer to a universal human capacity.

In the twentieth century, "culture" emerged as a concept central to anthropology, encompassing all human phenomena that are not purely results of human genetics. Specifically, the term "culture" in American anthropology had two meanings: (1) the evolved human capacity to classify and represent experiences with symbols, and to act imaginatively and creatively; and (2) the distinct ways that people living in different parts of the world classified and represented their experiences, and acted creatively. Following World War II, the term became important, albeit with different meanings, in other disciplines such as sociology, cultural studies, organizational psychology and management studies.

A. did you guys even take history class? for starters, the Hebrews were basically the last culture to develop meaning they were still freaking nomads and didn't know anything of crop rotation so they couldn't farm or be self-sufficient. second of all they were always being ruled by other cultures for most of the BCE era and when they finally established a kingdom, it collapsed due to extreme over taxation and corruption within one hundred years with only 3 rulers. third of all, the cultures that layed down the foundations of todays civilizations are mainly the Greeks and also the Romans and even the Hellenists the only thing that the Hebrews are notable for is creating the first monotheistic religion which helped to unify them as opposed to… [cont.]

How is American and British culture different?
Q. I'm from England, but I have dual nationality. My boyfriend lives in the US, and I'm planning to move out there to live with him, once I finish college. I'm worried that I won't get on with people there -- the culture seems completely different. I always assumed it was the same (perhaps because we speak the same language more or less), but after meeting some other American people, I've noticed that there's a huge difference between them and British people. How do you think they're different? Will I be able to get on with people over there? Thanks.

A. I can tell you that we Americans are as foreign to you, as say the Chinese are. Our food is different, our language is certainly different, even though you try to copy us, our way of dress is different. Our politics are different, when you live here, you will find out just how free you are in the U.K. Regardless of what that xenophobe has said our crime rate is far above that of the UK. Unlike you in the UK we cannot criticize our leaders and institutions as you can, because if we do we are said to be unpatriotic, regardless of if or not the person is entirely wrong, like the previous president. When you come to the USA as I hope you will, do not expect to find the same sense of humor that you have. When you go into the post office and they… [cont.]

A. As a chassidic hungarian jew I am very proud of the way that the chassidim in general have built themselves up from the holocaust keeping their religion and traditions in the middle of New York : their distinctive way of dress, the yiddish language, even the cuisine. I love the fact that I can go into a shop and buy farfel! which loosly is a dish made of dough bits, a bit like israeli farfel...with garlic as a side dish with brisket...yummy.

To which Lodovico replied: "I'd play on." According to the Russian thinker Georgy Fedotov, the importance of culture lies in precisely that: we go on playing ball on the verge of Doomsday....
